Emergency Medical Technician (E.M.T.)
The Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with Trumbull EMS, offers an Emergency Medical Technician (E.M.T.) course established by the State of Connecticut and National Registry of E.M.T.s. This certificate program offers students the knowledge and skills necessary to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to those who are sick or injured.
CT State Certified Instructors lead students through a semester-long course focusing on patient assessment and emergency care of the pre-hospital patient. This certificate program offers students the knowledge and skills necessary to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to those who are sick or injured. The course also prepares students for the two-part Emergency Medical Technician National Registry exam. This course meets education requirements established by the State of Connecticut and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Course instruction will cover:
- General pharmacology
- Respiratory emergencies
- Cardiovascular emergencies
- Musculoskeletal, head, and spine trauma
- Soft tissue injuries
- Ambulance operations
- Hazardous materials
- OB/GYN emergencies
- Scene safety
- Emergency medical techniques for children
Each course consists of both classroom and hands-on instruction in which participants are provided with textbooks, equipment, and supplies. This course is taught by EMT certified Instructors from Fairfield University's Department of Public Safety and the Town of Trumbull Emergency Medical Services. The course is offered periodically throughout the year.
Cost: $785.00 (not including textbook)
Fall Semester Dates: September 8-December 17, 2014
Spring Semester Dates: January 19-May 13, 2015
Monday and Wednesday nights: 6-10 p.m.; five Saturdays: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Coordinators include Victoria Benoit, a Registered Nurse and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, and Chief Joe Laucella of Trumbull EMS. All coordinators are State of Connecticut certified EMS Instructors and American Heart Association CPR Instructors with added certification in AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and First Aid. Guest lecturers from the medical field will make periodic visits.
