About the Collection Development Unit

The Collection Development Unit, located in the northeast corner of the main level, administers and expends the Library Materials Budget and Endowments and is responsible for the development of the print collection under the direction of the University Librarian and the Director of Library Services. The Unit is also responsible for gifts management and processing, the initiation and management of subscriptions for electronic resources, and the library book sale. In addition to the selection of current materials, retrospective development of the core collection is an ongoing priority. Many of the Unit's functions, including purchase orders, receiving, and serials check-in, utilize the integrated library system (ILS). All library mail is received and sorted in the Unit. Unit staff work closely with University Accounts Payable. Student assistants equivalent to 1 F. T. E. provide essential support to the Unit's mission. For policy information, please see the Collection Management Policy.

About the Acquisitions Department

The Acquisitions Department receives orders for monographs from faculty through Librarian Liaisons and directly from librarians, verifies bibliographic information and checks for duplication, orders and receives material, and approves invoices for payment. The Department also maintains monographic standing orders. Monthly fund reports which track allocation spending are sent to Deans, Department Heads, Program Directors, and Librarian Liaisons. Out-of-print purchasing is also done, along with book repair, binding, and pre-cataloging physical processing. The Unit is responsible for checking gifts against library holdings and completing their pre-cataloging processing. Contacts are maintained with major library vendors and distributors and scholarly publishers. Blanket orders and deposit accounts are maintained.

Do you have a suggestions for books, media materials, and/or journals that you would like to see in the Library? Submit your suggestions online.*

*Note to Faculty: This form is intended for your personal recommendations, independent of the annual school/department/program allocation provided by the library. Orders using your allocation should be submitted in the customary way to your Dean, Department Chair, Program Director, Faculty Library Liaison, or Librarian Liaison.

About the Serials Department

The Serials Department initiates and maintains all print and microform journal subscriptions, receives and processes materials, shelves new receipts, claims missing issues, and requests sample copies. Significant backfiles of closed titles are also maintained. The Integrated Library System and Ebsco Subscription Services' EBSCOnet support these activities. Serials holdings are also maintained in OCLC's Connecticut Union List of Serials and are reflected in the Connecticut State Library's reQuest database. The Department also manages the commercial binding of selected journals and withdrawn print issues of titles retained in microform, and replaces lost or damaged issues. Regular contact with our primary subscription agent ensures the orderly receipt of nearly 1,800 scholarly journals.
