Reference Policy

The Reference Department is staffed by reference librarians who provide guidance in the use of the library's resources. Reference assistance is provided primarily to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of Fairfield University, but members of the local community are assisted as time allows. Reference queries may be handled in person, via e-mail, via IM, via online chat, or via telephone. Priority is given to in-person queries.

Reference Desk service is offered during almost all of the hours the library is open (see Library Hours).

Reference hours during the spring and fall semesters are:

Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Sunday 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

The Reference Collection consists of encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes, bibliographies, reference guides and other resources designed to give an overview of a topic and point the way to other appropriate sources. Reference books may not leave the library except under very rare circumstances with approval of a reference librarian. All of the reference books and most of the electronic databases are accessible to anyone in the library, regardless of affiliation. A few databases must be restricted to use by current Fairfield University students, faculty and staff because of their usage agreements or pricing structures. We welcome suggestions on useful titles to add to the reference collection.
