Avoiding Plagiarism

“The Plagiarism Court: You Be the Judge” is a short tutorial designed to help you avoid the costly pitfalls of accidental plagiarism.  It covers the basics of plagiarism avoidance, including what constitutes plagiarism, the consequences of plagiarism, proper documentation of sources, note taking tips, suggestions for paraphrasing and using quotations, and information on citation styles.  What follows are the steps to access this Web tutorial.

To access The Plagiarism Court: You Be the Judge, connect to http://www.fairfield.edu/lib_plagiarismcourt.html.

Choose between the interactive Flash version and the HTML version.  Choose the Flash version for instant feedback when taking the quiz. Choose the HTML version if you are not using a high speed Internet connection or if your browser is incompatible.

After you have completed the quiz, please print out your results and hand them in to your EN 12 instructor.

Please note:  the quiz in the Flash version of the tutorial is superior to that in the HTML version, because it supplies immediate feedback. However, it is not possible to print out the quiz results from Flash. Thus, if you begin with the quiz in the Flash version, you will need to finish with the quiz in the HTML version in order to print your results. This should be a quick process, and you will benefit from the extra practice.
