Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts presents The Met: Live in HD with Don Carlo for encore broadcast only December 17

Don Carlo
The Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University will broadcast an encore of the Metropolitan Opera's first new production of Verdi's "Don Carlo" since 1979 on Friday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. when The Met: Live in HD series continues. The broadcast is nearly sold out. Tickets are $22 general, $20 seniors and $15 for children and students. "Don Carlo" is an Arts & Minds presentation.

Director Nicholas Hytner makes his Met debut with this new production of Verdi's profound, beautiful, and most ambitious opera. Roberto Alagna (Live in HD: "Carmen," "La Rondine," "Roméo et Juliette") will sing the conflicted title character; Marina Poplavskaya (Live in HD: "Turandot") will portray Elisabeth of Valois, torn between duty to her husband, Philip, and love for his son, Carlo; Anna Smirnova is the "fatal beauty" Princess Eboli; Simon Keenlyside (Live in HD: "Hamlet") is the revolutionary Rodrigo; Ferruccio Furlanetto sings the tyrannical and tormented King Philip II; and Eric Halfvarson is the opera's ultimate authority figure, the Grand Inquisitor. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, back after his triumphant debut leading "Carmen", conducts.

The opening night performance on November 22 "earned an enthusiastic ovation" (The New York Times) from critics and audiences: "You've heard about total theater? This is it." (Variety); "A clear-cut hit... rarely have I seen an opera audience so unanimously satisfied" (Philadelphia Inquirer).
