Image: Fairfield UniversityTwo Fairfield University students, Tara Hurley of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Allyson Wuensch of North Haledon, N.J., have been awarded a grant from the College of Arts and Sciences' Humanities Institute to develop activities promoting humanitarian advocacy.

The two seniors are members of the International Studies/Business Club's student-led Humanitarian Advocacy Project, a joint initiative with the International Studies Program which encourages students to be more informed about and participate in some of today's most pressing global concerns. The grant enabled members of the project to arrange several events on the Fairfield campus this spring aimed at increasing dialogue about current humanitarian efforts and global citizenship. All events are open to the public and admission is free.

  • On Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. leaders and representatives from the non-profit organizations Action Against Hunger, African Sky, and World Youth Alliance, will join with student leaders to discuss efforts local organizations have made to help end pressing humanitarian crises. The event is in the lower level of the John A. Barone Campus Center.
  • On Tuesday, March 23 at 8 p.m., Dr. John Ghazvinian, acclaimed journalist and author of "Untapped: The Scramble for Africa's Oil," will speak in the Presentation Room of the Kelley Center.
  • On Monday, March 29 at 4 p.m., Dr. Thomas Weiss, presidential professor of political science at the CUNY Graduate Center and director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, and author of "What's Wrong with the United Nations (and How to Fix it)" will speak in the Presentation Room of the Kelley Center.

The Humanities Institute, the International Studies Program, the Environment Studies Program, the Black Studies Program, the Office of Living and Learning, the Center for Faith and Public Life, the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network, and the Anthropology department are co-sponsors of these events.
