The result is far more biomass along the shallows of the Eastern Seaboard than what would occur if the mollusks were left up to their own devices, both scientists and those in the industry say. "And since they're filter feeders, they're really quite effective at cleaning the water, taking out excess plankton," said Fairfield University marine sciences professor Diane J. Brousseau.
