Dr. Miriam Sahatdjian Gogol

Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Miriam Sahatdjian Gogol is an Americanist of scholarly distinction with a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Prior to Fairfield, she was a tenured full professor of English. From the beginning, her career has been guided by a strong commitment to undergraduate education in the liberal arts.

As one of two associate deans in the College of Arts and Sciences, she has worked closely with Dr. Timothy Law Snyder, dean, on departmental conflict resolution, the implementation of program assessment (including the overseeing of outside evaluators), and the review of the College's extensive array of interdisciplinary programs. In addition to her regular decanal duties, her projects include coordinating programs for post-baccalaureate scholarships and undergraduate research opportunities. Under her watch, Fairfield University has twice been recognized nationally as number one in its category in the number of Fulbrights awarded. This past year, Fairfield students have won five Fulbright Student Scholarships (to China, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Germany, and Canada). When time permits, she teaches "Working Women in the U.S.: 1865 to the Present," a course in the American Studies master's degree program.

Dr. Gogol's passion for administrative work derives from the particular pleasure she takes in working collaboratively with people in professional settings. In this regard, she has had equal success as founder of the International Dreiser Society, which has grown extensively in numbers and in recognition since its inception in 1991. In October 2001, it was featured on C-SPAN. She enjoys bringing together people of diverse constituencies, defusing conflicts, finding consensus, and uniting faculty in common goals.

Her scholarship includes Theodore Dreiser: Beyond Naturalism (New York University Press, 1995). This edited collection with lengthy introductory essay won the Choice Award for one of "the best academic books of 1996," and received highly favorable reviews from such journals as Studies in the Novel. A recent article she wrote on Dreiser for Resources in American Literary Studies was chosen as lead essay. In fall 1999, she was Senior Fulbright Scholar at Ostrava University in the Czech Republic, where she taught seminars in Women's Studies, American Realism and Naturalism, and lectured to the university-at-large.
