Nabokov's Butterflies
by Kim Bridgford

It is the butterflies that fascinate,
The wing-spread of their Latin on display,
Their bodies pinned in flight and mystery,
Delivering both weightlessness and weight.

So like the act of writing: the sought word
Pined after, studied, delicately chased
And added to the paper, where released
It's both the thing itself and what occurred.

Nabokov's dedications to this wife
Brought his preoccupations all together,
For what is longing but a way of life:
The trembling on a stem of words and weather,
The patience of what's difficult and sought,
The words that speak beyond words when they're caught?

"A highlight of the conference in St. Petersburg was the chance to meet faculty from several Russian universities. The range of their interests was so impressive - in addition to their own disciplines they have studied history, literature, poetry and art from around the world. Their command of English was awesome and their love of life and sense of humor made our time together thoroughly enjoyable as well as productive."
