2007-08

Honors students - Avenue Q trip

Saturday, September 15: Honors Freshman Orientation, Dr. Michael White, Professor of English, will lead a discussion of his novel The Garden of Martyrs. The session will be held at 10:00 in Canisius 100. Students and faculty will share lunch in the Faculty Dining Room after the discussion.

Saturday, September 29: Honors Trip to the award-wining musical "Avenue Q" at the John Golden Theatre, New York, 2:00 p.m. Dinner at a restaurant in the city will follow the performance.

Wednesday, October 3: After-hours Tour of the Exhibition "The Creative Photograph in Archaeology," led by Dr. Katherine Schwab, Associate Professor of Art History, Walsh Art Gallery, 5:00 p.m. Dinner at a local restaurant will follow the tour.

Thursday, October 25: Honors Colloquium, "Multiculturalism in American Music: Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' as Illustration and Performance." At the piano, Dr. Orin Grossman, Professor of Visual and Performing Arts and Academic Vice-President. The colloquium will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on the stage of the Kelley Theatre, Quick Center for the Performing Arts. Dinner at a local restaurant will follow the colloquium.

Saturday, November 3: Honors Trip to tour the new Greek and Roman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The tour will be led by Dr. Katherine Schwab, Associate Professor of Visual and Performing Arts. The tour will begin at 3:00 p.m. Dinner at a restaurant in the city will follow the tour.

Wednesday, January 23: Third Annual Pictionary Smackdown, to be held in the McGrath Room in Egan Chapel at 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, February 13: Honors Colloquium, Dr. Michael White, Professor of English, will lead a discussion of his newly-published novel Soul Catcher. The session will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in Canisius 200. After the discussion, students and faculty will share dinner at a local restaurant.

Tuesday, March 25: Honors Colloquium, "The Politics of Sex and Morality: Abstinence-only Sex Education in America," led by Dr. Jocelyn Boryczka, Assistant Professor of Politics. The colloquium will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Coughlin Conference Room, CNS 100, followed by a dinner at a local restaurant.

Saturday, March 29: Honors Trip to the Oscar Wilde play, "A Woman of No Importance," Yale Repertory Theatre, New Haven, 2:00 p.m. Dinner at a New Haven restaurant will follow the play.

Saturday, April 5: Honors Trip to the Broadway musical "Sunday in the Park with George," at 2:00 at the Roundabout Theater/Studio 54 in Manhattan. The performance will be followed by dinner at a restaurant in the city.

2006-07

September 16: Freshman Honors Orientation, Dr. Kim Bridgford, Professor of English, led a late morning discussion of her collection of poems Undone, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Newly-arrived freshmen Honors students shared lunch in the Faculty Dining Room after the session.

September 30: Ten students attended the play "Eurydice" at the Yale Repertory Theatre, followed by dinner at a New Haven restaurant. The Yale Rep production has since opened off-Broadway to rave reviews.

October 19: Dr. Yohuru Williams, Associate Professor of History and Director of Black Studies, led an Honors Colloquium on "Color, Features, and Hair: Re-Thinking Race in the Twenty-First Century." Eight students attended the discussion, which was followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

November 11: The Honors Program sponsored a trip to "Bodies: The Exhibition," at the South Street Seaport, New York. Fifteen students attended the tour of the exhibition, which was followed by dinner at a New York restaurant.

January 23: "Second Annual Pictionary Smackdown."

February 7: Dr. Michael White, Associate Professor of English, led an Honors Colloquium on his latest novel, The Garden of Martyrs. Twenty-three students engaged the author in a discussion of the plot and the creative process, and then adjourned to a local restaurant to continue the discussion over dinner.

February 24: The Honors Program sponsored a trip to the matinee performance of the Broadway musical "The Apple Tree," starring Kristen Chenoweth of "Wicked" fame. Thirteen students attended the play, which was followed by dinner at a restaurant in the city.

March 27: Dr. Linda Henkel, Associate Professor of Psychology, led an Honors Colloquium on the topic "Memory: The Mind's Own Photoshop." Ten students attended the discussion, which continued over dinner at a local restaurant.

April 26: Graduating seniors John Jorgensen and Anna Stabile organized a Senior Honors Research Symposium at which seven seniors presented research conducted for their Senior Honors Projects to an audience of Honors students and faculty. The event was energized by a cake for graduating seniors and other refreshments.

April 28: The Honors Program sponsored a trip for ten students to the matinee performance of the Broadway rock musical "Spring Awakening," followed by dinner at a restaurant in the city. Prior to the play, Dr. Kurt Schlichting, Professor of Sociology, offered the students a tour of the Grand Concourse of Grand Central Terminal.
