Fairfield University's Green Profiles

BicyclistLiving a green life takes awareness, commitment, and a change of habits - some subtle and some lifestyle-altering. Here members of the Fairfield University community share ways they live a green life - in the home, in the classroom, and anywhere else eco-friendly choices are made. Enjoy their profiles and, if you're a member of the Fairfield community, submit your own any time - we'd love to pick up a few tips from you too!

Are you a "reluctant environmentalist" - someone whose heart is in the right place but whose habits can use some "eco-reco" (reconsideration from an eco-friendly point of view)? Then follow the trials and tribulations of Fairfield's original "Reluctant Environmentalist", a blog by Professor Mariann Regan, Professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, and join the conversation at our Red to Green blog.

What I do / don't do to discourage waste:

  • Don't buy things I don't need.
  • Buy local, organic and fair trade when I have to buy. (Fairfield has a farmers market!)
  • Plant a garden (next spring!).
  • Walk / bike to work, or beg rides from people going the same way. (I live by the beach. Why is there no bus up from Reef Road?)
  • Use low energy natural gas furnace.
  • Keep my thermostat low in the day (when I'm not home) and at night (when I'm asleep).
  • Use all energy saving bulbs in my house.
  • Use energy saving, low water washer.
  • Don't use clothes dryer (use air to dry).
  • Installed a low water use toilet.
  • Installed a low flow shower.
  • Turn off power to appliances when not in use (to avoid electricity loss in DVD players, etc.).
  • Berate my students for being lazy and driving to class.
