Department of English

EnglishThe English Deparment offers a lively and diverse program, with courses in literature, creative writing and journalism. As an academic discipline, the study of English has these goals:

  1. to acquaint the student with the various types of imaginative literature, such as the novel, the short story, poetry, and drama;
  2. to develop the student's analytic and organizational skills through the interpretation of literature;
  3. to give the student further training in the organization and effective articulation of ideas in writing, including in some cases preparation for careers as professional writers or for careers where strong writing skills will be an asset.

Profile

Audrey Adade
English major

Audrey Adade"I've always had a passion for reading and writing, and I want to be an investigative journalist one day. My classes are wonderful, and the professors are very invested in the needs of the students. When you seek assistance, they don't just give you information, but a broad range of honest insight as well.

Last year, I was able to get an internship at a press in Stamford, and everything I wrote was published. Now, I'm at the Stamford Advocate every morning doing editorial assistant work. I've learned the value of having confidence in my own opinion, in my ideas. Between my classes and my internships, I feel very well prepared for the future."
