Online Maintenance Request Application Now OnlineAnyone who's worked for the University for a while is familiar with the Maintenance and Construction Request forms that get filled out when a window needs repairing or a new set of whiteboards need to be installed in a classroom. But those forms are going the way of dinosaur, thanks to collaboration between Campus Operations and Computing & Network Services. Earlier this fall, Campus Operations began rolling out a new automated work order system, designed and programmed by C&NS. The application, written using FileMaker as a back-end database, allows Campus Operations to manage all of their work tickets and assignments, track the technicians assigned to each task, and keep on top of the materials and labor costs associated with each job.
The system also has a complex reporting feature built in, allowing supervisors and managers to obtain up-to-the-minute summaries on such topics as jobs in progress, costs by building, technician assignments, and charge-back details. For the general campus user, a simple web-based Maintenance and Construction Request form has been developed (available at http://www.fairfield.edu/workorder); now, all the information that had previously been filled out on a multi-part paper form and sent through campus mail can now be instantaneously entered into the Campus Operations work order database.
