About Office 2007

Microsoft Office 2007 is the latest version of the Office Suite available from Microsoft for the PC. This new version is significantly different than the previous versions of Office. There are two main features that need to be learned in order to use the new version of Office properly: 1) The new fluent user interface and 2) File Compatibility with earlier versions of Office.

The Fluent User Interface. The look of Microsoft Office has changed. The traditional way of using Office commands via menus, toolbars, and task panes no longer exist. Instead there are three new interface features that you must learn in order to navigate through and use Office properly: The Office Button, Quick Access Toolbar, and the Ribbon. More information about these features can be found on the Using Microsoft Office web page.

File Compatibility. The file format in which Office saves its files has changed. As a result, files created in Office 2007/2008 can not normally be opened in Office 2003 for Windows or Office 2004 for Mac. However, there are methods that allow you to save your Office files in a version that non-Office 2007/2008 users can read. For more information about file compatibility with Office 2007/2008, please visit the Opening and using files in Office 2007/2008 web page.

Office 2007/2008 for Home Use

Office 2007 and 2008 for Mac is available from the Library for home use only. Do not, under any circumstances, install Microsoft Office 2007 or 2008 for Mac or Windows Vista by yourself on University owned computers. The software that is available from the Library is for home use only. It is not the same software that is used by C&NS to deploy to University machines. Such an action will result in a complete erasing of your computer and the reinstallation of Windows XP/Mac OS X and Office 2003 or Office 2004 for Mac.
