Teaching Philosophy

"Do no harm" is at the center of my belief system about the teaching of creative writing. Whether a writer is at the beginning of her apprenticeship or has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the craft, my approach is always the same. Firstly, I respect the effort involved in making art. No one should ever interfere with another's sacred impulse to create. Next, I aim to facilitate the process of generating memorable imaginative writing. I work to guide students to their own material and then help them to develop their critical capabilities as writers, readers, and editors.

I believe in the power of art - to mend what's broken within ourselves and our world. Teaching creative writing is an act of communion. It's a responsibility and an honor to be privy to another's truth and imagination. Little else compares.
