Classroom Observation
Thursday, February 23, 2012

Many of us, understandably, look forward to peer review of our teaching much as we would having a root canal. But research shows ways to humanize the work, for mutual reflection and transformation. While best practices demand training in 3 main areas -- a) judging learning objectives, assignment instructions and grading criteria, teaching philosophies, or other teaching materials; b) interpreting student ratings and assessing student work; c) writing observation narratives -- this session focuses on classroom observation (preparing, conducting and debriefing). Practice with video clips leads to takeaways including pathways and pitfalls for both purely improvement purposes and for decisions like annual review and tenure & promotion. Lunch provided.
