Putting the "Learning" into Service-Learning Experiences (webinar)
Wednesday, December 8, 2010
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Library 107C
Service-learning courses can make positive improvements to student learning and retention, but only if they are intentionally designed and developed. The first-year student experience can and should include service-learning opportunities, but when planning these programs, it is crucial to keep in mind the developmental stages of this population. Join the Center for Academic Excellence, Office of Service Learning, and Office of New Student Programs for a webinar to discover why having service-learning as a part of the first-year student experience is supported by recent persistence data. You will learn how to intentionally develop a program based on a first-year student's developmental stage. This webinar will be helpful for those directly connected with Fairfield’s FYE program, as well as faculty who teach first year, introductory, and foundational courses. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN An expert instructor will highlight examples from institutions that effectively create service-learning for first-year students and will discuss the following: • Student learning outcomes for service-learning • How you can integrate components of the first-year student experience and service-learning • Links to retention and improved skill-building • Components of an effective model for service-learning in the first year
