"Where is Knowing Going?"
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Library 107C
Fr. John Haughey S.J. of Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University will offer a lunchtime seminar on “Teaching and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.” Fr. Haughey is currently a senior research fellow at the Woodstock Center, where he coordinates Woodstock’s Catholic Higher Education Project. His latest book is Where Is Knowing Going? The Horizons of the Knowing Subject (Georgetown, 2009), where he examines the current state of Catholic institutions of higher learning and offers a novel approach to the question of how these schools can remain true to their roots while recognizing that many of their administrations, faculties and student bodies have little connection with the tradition. Indeed, one of the primary objectives of the workshop is to explore ways to share the Catholic tradition with those who do not participate fully in it. Two copies of Where Is Knowing Going? are available on the bookshelves adjacent to the Center for Academic Excellence in the library. While reading the book is not necessary for workshop participants, those who are interested might find Chapters 1, 3, 5, and 6 to be informative. John Haughey holds a doctorate in sacred theology from Catholic University of America. He is a former professor of religious ethics at Loyola University Chicago and has also taught theology and religion at Georgetown University, Fordham University, Seton Hall University, Weston School of Theology, John Carroll University, and Marquette University. In 2007 he received the Monika K. Hellwig Award for outstanding contributions to Catholic intellectual life from the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. Lunch provided; register early. We hope you can join us for lunch and conversation.
