Integrating Tunnel of Oppression Into Class: Disturbing Students into Discomfort while Empowering them to Change

Fairfield undergrads report having less interaction with students who are different from them and less exposure to diverse opinions, cultures, and values than comparison groups. While our student body has become more diverse, our culture needs to become more inclusive of that diversity. As part of national Enough Is Enough week (campuses across the country will speak out, engage in dialogue and take action to stem the tide of societal violence), Fairfield University is hosting the Tunnel of Oppression, on Tue. April 13 through Fri. Apr. 16, 2010. Join us for a micro-experience of your own, become familiarized with the different rooms that will make up the tunnel here, and anticipate reactions that could come of it. Learn how to integrate this highly experiential event with your courses or scholarly projects this semester, experience a hands-on activity and take away applications to your work as faculty or professional staff (co-hosted by the Office of Institutional Diversity Initiatives, President’s Institutional Diversity Council, and Robyn Kaplan, University Activities). Lunch provided; please register early.
