Statistics for Everyone: A Workshop on Integrating Statistical Thinking Into Your Courses (THIS IS A 2 DAY WORKSHOP)
Monday, June 15, 2009
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
TBD
Some faculty have little background in quantitative reasoning and statistical thinking and although some others are familiar with statistical tests they use often, they are not necessarily well versed in the wide variety of statistical analysis tools available and are not always able to communicate such information effectively to students. Therefore, we will offer a two-day faculty development workshop on June 15 - 16 for professors who teach science, social science, and humanities courses and who are interested in introducing and using statistics in those courses. The workshop will be conducted by Laura McSweeney and Linda Henkel, who regularly teach statistics courses in our Mathematics and Psychology Departments. The goal of the workshop is to provide background and resources for faculty so that they learn how to integrate statistics and statistical thinking into their courses. Faculty will contribute examples from their field and will have the opportunity to develop a statistics-based module for a course they currently teach. Through handouts, lectures, discussions, hands-on exercises, and technology, this workshop will provide important information and valuable resources so that faculty can more confidently integrate statistics into their specific classes. All statistical analyses will be done using Excel, which is readily available to faculty and students. Online resources for data sets and interactive Excel worksheets will be provided for the participants. Each participant will receive a $200 stipend, all materials for the workshop, and lunch each day. This workshop is sponsored by the Core Integration Initiative and the CAE.
