Est. 1994. Home of the Women Ruggers
The Women's Rugby Club at Fairfield University was founded as a sport club in 1994. During the fall '13 season, the club enjoyed a spirited and competitive weekend on October 5, joining with the men's club to celebrate 50 years of rugby play at Fairfield. Over the years, the women have established a solid program, competing against regional teams in the New England area. Those teams have included Hofstra, Bard, Marist, and Sacred Heart.
This season, the Ruggers elevated the program to Division II status in the recently formed Tri-State Collegiate Rugby Conference. Divisional opponents are Hofstra, Molloy, Rutgers and Stony Brook. All league competition occurs during the fall academic semester.
The home rugby pitch of the Red Ruggers is the Lt. Hans Grauert Memorial Field. Christopher Grauert, '68 and his mother, Leila B. Grauert, donated the rugby pitch to Fairfield in 2003 in honor of his brother Lt. Hans Grauert, who was a naval aviator lost at sea during the Vietnam War.
Fairfield women's rugby continues a great tradition on and off the pitch as representatives of Fairfield University.
