The Irish film series begins on Wednesday, October 3, with "The Dead" (1987), from James Joyce's 1914 collection, "Dubliners." Directed by John Huston and starring Huston's daughter, Anjelica, in the role of Gretta Conroy, the wife of Gabriel, a Dublin University professor, played by Donal McCann. The story is about the interrelationship between the living and the dead and how the dead are more alive than the living. This is illustrated in the Conroy marriage, when Gretta tells Gabriel of Michael Furey, a boy she knew from Galway, whom she believes died for her. Once Gretta cries herself to sleep, Gabriel has an epiphany where he realizes his wife's true passion lies in Galway with the dead Michael.

Dr. Pearson, who teaches Irish Literature and Irish Drama, will introduce the film.
