1982 Hall of Fame Inductees
John J. Barry '62, cross country, track: Captained the cross country and track team from 1960-62. He won the Marlboro Cross Country MVP Trophy in 1962 and set school records for cross country, the 880-yard and mile runs along with the one-mile relay.
Norbert (Norb) Fahey Jr. '53, baseball, men's basketball: Described as a great team player and leader, Norb served as captain of the 1952-53 baseball team and struck out 20 men in one game. He was also co-captain of the 1952-53 basketball team.
Thomas N. Finch '71, men's basketball, baseball: Finch was on the basketball team in 1968-71 and on the baseball team from 1969-71. In baseball, he was the all-time career leading hitter with a lifetime batting average of .358. Finch also played in the Minnesota Twins organization.
Robert (Bob) Gerwien '55, men's basketball: Co-captain of the 1954-55 basketball team. An outstanding rebounder, Bob led the team in scoring for three years and scored 1,062 points in his career.
William E. Granata '69, baseball, football: Co-captain of the 1969 baseball team, set a team record of seven RBIs in one game and batted .300 for his career. He was also co-captain of the 1969 club football team, was named most valuable player, and earned Club Football All-American honors. Bill was also the recipient of the ECAC Athletic Scholarship Award in 1969.
George T. Groom '73, men's basketball: Co-captained the 1971-72 basketball team and served as captain from 1972-73. George scored 1,486 points in his career; scored over 30 points seven times, set the single game field goal record (18, twice); most points in a game in 1972 (41); highest career scoring average (19.8 per game); and holds the single season field goal record from 1971-72 with 224.
William (Bill) S. Jones '68, men's basketball: A great all-around player, team leader, and captain of the 1967-68 basketball team, Bill was picked for All-East and All-New England honors. He played professional basketball for teams in Connecticut and earned tryouts with the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets.
Frank R. Magaletta '70, men's basketball: Co-captain of the 1969-70 basketball team, Frank scored 1,399 points in his career and holds the school record for most field goals in a season (1969-70) with 224 and most points in a season (1969-70) with 546.
John F. O'Connell '55, men's basketball: Co-captain with Gerwien in 1954-55 and was the first Fairfield player to average over 20 points a game (20.3) during his 1954-55 season. He holds a career scoring total of 1,016 points.
John T. Redway '59, baseball: A great all-around player and hitter, John holds a career batting average of .320 with the baseball team and played with a Milwaukee Braves farm team.
John S. Ryan '74, men's basketball: Co-captained the 1973-74 basketball team and set the school record for assists for his career with 675, in a season (1971-72) with 301, and average per game for a season (1973-74) with 11.6. |
