Members of classes of every five years from 1964 to 2004 turned out in great numbers for a gorgeous Reunion Weekend on June 6-7. More than 1,600 alumni and their families attended "classes," toured campus, and reconnected with friends and classmates they hadn't seen in years.

Image: Reunion 2009"The campus was just breathtaking to behold," marvelled John Carway '64. "It is simply amazing to see how in 45 years they have added 24 new buildings and still managed to maintain a feeling of openness. The campus is both completely new and totally familiar at the same time."

There were activities for everyone - from the annual Fun Run to the barbeque, as well as classes and campus tours that were held throughout the afternoon. A playscape, kids' tent, and games kept younger children entertained, while older children had a chance to get some basketball tips from varsity athletes duImage: Reunion 2009 - Sports Clinicring the afternoon Stags Sports Clinic.

The Class of 1974 celebrated their 35th Reunion with a "Memories and Mimosas" reception in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library. Bob Harbeck '74 noted, "Our class came together to celebrate our unique place in Fairfield University history - the first class of women admitted to Fairfield." A display called "The Groovy '70s" highlighted nostalgic items from the decade, and the 1974 Class Committee prepared a slideshow of photographs for the occasion. "The event was poignant and reminiscent of why I am so happy to be a part of the Fairfield University alumni family," said Joan Makara '74. Later in the afternoon, faculty and alumnae came together in a special panel on the history of women at Fairfield.

More than 55 alumni joined University President Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., and Trustees Tom Franko '69 and Frank Carroll '89, in a "Conversation with the President" where they fielded questions on topics such as future plans for the campus to Fairfield's Jesuit heritage. One alumnus, Philip Baroody '74, P'09 (pictured above left), spoke of his appreciation for Jesuit education. "My years at Fairfield and the education I received there molded me into the person that I am today... My daughter, Sarah, just graduated from Fairfield and I am very proud of her."

Other activities included a session on jazz with Associate Professor Brian Torff, award-winning bassist and composer (pictured above right with two alumni), and a presentation on the economic crisis, featuring four alumni.

Many married alumni couples and legacy families with multiple generations of Fairfield graduates had their photos taken following an afternoon Mass at Egan Chapel. Twins Michael and Patrice McCann '94 (pictured below on left) were among those families celebrating their Reunion together. "It's always great to return to Fairfield to see how the University has grown and matured - much like the graduates," Michael reflected. Patrice added, "It was great seeing everyone again, reconnecting, and the fun of having my brother celebrate with me!" Last month their father, Charlie McCann '59, celebrated his 50th Reunion. Charlie's grandson, Timothy McCann '13, will keep the Fairfield legacy going as an incoming freshman this fall.

And, of course, there were the evening's special class cocktail receptions and dinners, and the Bellarmine Gardens Dinner Dance, where almost a thousand Fairfield alumni enjoyed a live band playing tunes spanning all of the Reunion decades until midnight. Kristin (Kane) Ford '04Image: Reunion 2009 and her husband Michael (pictured right) were impressed with the festivities under the tent. "The Dinner Dance was beyond our expectations! We danced the night away with people we have not seen in years. We look forward to 2014 and sitting in the '10 year' section! Thanks to everyone for their hard work in making our reunion unforgettable!"

In the usual Fairfield tradition, the Class of 1959 celebrated its 50th Reunion during Commencement Weekend in May, when the newest "Golden Stags" processed with the Class of 2009. (The Hon. William Lavery '59, the Hon. Michael Mullen '59, and Dr. Patrick Carolan '59 are pictured below.)

This year's Reunion classes also showed their generosity, presenting Fr. von Arx with a "check" for over a million dollars. Giving highlights included a $30,000 contribution from the 1989 Reunion Committee to their class gift when 30 percent participation was reached. The Class of 1979 raised the most funds, at $317,000. The president thanked all Reunion donors for "rekindling pride in the University that has played such a key role in so many lives over the years."
