Policies Regarding Clinical
- Students are expected to attend all clinical nursing activities with absences permitted only if certified as unavoidable because of illness or other cause.
- Make-up of missed clinical experiences will be determined by the clinical faculty member and Course Coordinator.
- Each faculty member will discuss with her/his clinical students contingencies for illness and weather problems.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the various facilities used for the practice of nursing, as well as any parking expenses incurred. Car pooling is a common practice with students.
This policy is formulated to ensure standards of dress and appearance that reflect professionalism and represent Fairfield University to area hospitals and community settings. The following is considered to be neat, professional, comfortable, and congruent with the dress of nursing practitioners. Faculty will ask students to leave the clinical area if appearance is not appropriate.
- Hair must be neat, secured (if long), and should not touch the collar.
- Nails must be trimmed to avoid injury to clients, and if nail polish is worn it should be a neutral color and not be chipped.
- Jewelry other than a simple wedding band should not be worn in the clinical area. One small stud earring may be worn in each ear lobe. Body piercing and body art must be concealed with clothing.
- Make-up should be used in moderation.
- Male students should be clean shaven or have neatly trimmed beards or moustache.
Students are responsible for purchasing uniforms.
- Red scrub top and black scrub pants must be purchased from Fairfield University Bookstore (must be worn for all in-hospital and community settings for all clinical courses.
- Black shoes, sneakers, or clogs should be worn.
- White scrub jacket or lab coat is allowed to be worn over scrub top or polo shirt.
Students must have the following equipment:
- Watch with a second hand or digital second read out
- Stethoscope with bell and diaphragm
- Bandage scissors
- A small pad with blue/black pen
Gum chewing is not permitted. It detracts from your professional demeanor.
Cell phones must be in the off mode during clinical.
Graduate student attire in the clinical setting should be neat, professional, comfortable, and congruent with the agency's policy. All students should wear a Fairfield University Identification badge.
Obtaining an ID badge prior to clinical is the students responsibility. Fairfield University School of Nursing identification tags can be purchased through:

Transition provides you with the opportunity to synthesize previous learning, solidify strengths, address weaknesses, and prepare for NCLEX. It helps you to follow your interests as well as goals for employment as you move from the role of student to professional nurse. It is important that you have the best possible experience that will meet your learning needs for this final clinical rotation. You will complete 168 clinical hours for NS 332; this includes clinical conference time which will count toward your hours. You must also complete nationally standardized testing as assigned to complete the course.
Each student will submit a request form that allows you to indicate your preferences for location, and type of unit. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preferences. Students requests will be considered using overall G.P.A. and Nursing G.P.A., beginning with the highest overall average. To qualify for working in a specialty unit, defined as any unit beyond the medical-surgical unit, you must have:
1. Achieved an overall GPA of at least 3.25;
2. A 3.0 or above in your science and psychology courses;
3. Achieved at least a 3.0 in NS 312 and NS 325
