The Connecticut Post talked about the holiday with professor Xin James He of Fairfield University's Dolan School of Business. He grew up in China and has fond memories of the holiday. He said, "The color red is the dominant color for the New Year's celebration. It's the opposite of what it is in this country. In the U.S., when you're behind in your finances, we say that you're 'in the red.' In China, it's just the opposite: Green means you're in trouble. Red means prosperity. Gold is also important, too."
