Curl Up With A Good Book:
Faculty Favorites

With the holiday season behind us and winter in full swing, now is a great time to settle into a comfortable chair with a pile of good books at your side. Here are some of Fairfield's faculty recommendations to get you through until spring:

Dr. Cecelia Bucki

Packinghouse Daughter: A Memoir
By Cheri Register

Register, a professor of English literature, weaves her own memories of growing up in the packing town of Albert Lea, Minnesota, around the momentous strike of 1959. She details the tragedy of class conflict that tears apart families and a community.

Mollie's Job: A Story of a Life and Work on the Global Assembly Line
By William Adler

A journalistic account tracing a manufacturing job that moves from New Jersey to Mississippi during the turmoil of the civil rights movement, to Matamoros, Mexico. Adler humanizes national and international economic forces, political events, and trends in industrial management to provide a picture of the "free trade" economy in action.

Dr. Mary Ann Carolan
Director of Italian studies

Italian Neighbors or, A Lapsed Anglo-Saxon in Verona
By Tim Parks

A hilarious but insightful memoir by an English translator/professor who lives in Verona with his family.

Corelli's Mandolin
By Louis De Bernieres

A moving story of war, love, familial rapport, and a little bit of medicine. I've heard that the movie does not do justice to this fine piece of literature.

Girl with a Pearl Earring
By Tracy Chevalier

The story behind an enchanting masterpiece by Vermeer, this compelling book is historical fiction with an artistic bent.

The Betrothed
By Alessandro Manzoni

readingThis book has everything: plague, war, a contested marriage, kidnapping, evil nuns, reformed criminals, and a character so bad that he must remain unnamed. The Betrothed represents an investment of time, but it is well worth it.

Dr. Matt Coleman
Chair of mathematics and computer science

Zarafa: A Giraffe's True Story from Deep in Africa to the Heart of Paris
By Michael Allin

In the early 19th century, the viceroy of Egypt decided to send a giraffe as a present to the King of France. The book tells the story of the giraffe's trip and addresses the politics of the early 19th century Mediterranean.

Wittgenstein's Vienna
By Allan Janik and Stephen Toulmin

A wonderful cultural history of Vienna in the early 20th century.

Dr. Nancy M. Haegel
Professor of physics

The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory
By Brian Greene

This is a story of recent developments in the area of "string theory," a current and fascinating attempt in the on-going search for a grand unified theory in physics. Greene's prose is accessible and engaging, offering something for all levels of interested readers.

Dr. Marti LoMonaco
Associate professor of visual and performing arts and director of the theatre program

In America: A Novel
By Susan Sontag

Theatrelovers and those enticed by the romance of California in the late 19th century will enjoy this fictionalized account of the life of Polish actress, Helena Modjeska, who left her native Poland with friends to found a utopian commune in southern California. This novel charts her success as the toast of the American stage.

Anna Karenina
By Leo Tolstoy, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky

A new version of the beloved Russian classic, this translation captures the spirit of Tolstoy's novel in gripping, readable English. A noted husband-wife team, Pevear and Volokhonsky are responsible for introducing us to an Anna and Vronsky we never really knew before.

Dr. Laurence Miners

McCullough won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for this very interesting biography.

3,000 return for Homecoming Weekend 2001

Tailgating

May '01 graduates Terry Cosgrove, Paul Pennelli, Matthew Payne, and Nick Ouimet returned to campus with their grill, cooler, football, and friends for the pre-game tailgate on Saturday morning.

Fairfield welcomed back nearly 3,000 alumni and their families in November for Homecoming Weekend 2001. The weekend kicked off on Friday night with the Alumni Association's Annual Athletic Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony.

Celebrating started early on Saturday, with hundreds of alumni tailgating prior to filling the stands and cheering on the Stags as they played Duquesne under the bright afternoon sunshine. After the game, alumni, friends, and students went to the Levee to meet the coaches for a reception. To cap off the day, the Pat McGee Band played to a full house in the renovated Barone Campus Center.

The weekend concluded on Sunday with an Alumni Mass in the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola celebrated by Rev. Charles Allen, S.J.

Club Happenings

Boston -

On a crisp September Sunday afternoon in Boston, 15 Fairfield University alumni participated in this year's Fairfield Alumni Club of Boston Service Outing for Habitat for Humanity. The group worked a full day on a site that will house four families in a revitalized Dorchester neighborhood. One crew prepared the foundation footings for the front and back porches, while another group practiced their home improvement skills on the roof (where they enjoyed a terrific view of the Boston skyline while preparing the roofing supplies). Many thanks to all volunteers for helping out!

Walter Pelletier, S.J., and Rev. William Carr, S.J. concelebrating, the couple renewed their marriage vows.

Alumni Postcards: Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville

John Uliano '01 is Volunteer Coordinator at Safe Haven, an agency based in Nashville, Tenn., that provides housing for homeless families with children. This is a one-year placement through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC).

Families living at this drug- and alcohol-free residence usually stay for about 45 days. One condition for living at Safe Haven is that one or both parents must hold a job and save 75% of their income through the shelter savings program. This portion is applied toward personal debt relief and helps the families begin the transition to independent living.

Conducting case work is part of John's duties at the shelter. "I play with the kids and do whatever is needed," he says. Daily tasks include making lunch or dinner, picking up donations, and organizing activities for the part-time volunteers. He also assists in conducting the shelter's $8 million campaign and writing for the newsletter.

Working 12-plus-hour days at the shelter is not unusual. "The funny thing is," says John, "I don't mind them. I enjoy the work, so that's what keeps me going."

The shelter is in need of adult and children's clothing - all sizes, and in usable condition. Clothing can be shipped to: Safe Haven Family Shelter, c/o John Uliano, 1234 3rd Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37210. In addition to clothing, the shelter needs new baby supplies and general hygiene products. John welcomes email at johnuliano@hotmail.com.
