Alumni return for Reunion Weekend 2000
Fairfield University welcomed alumni from the Classes of 1955, '60, '65, '70, '75, '80, '85, '90, and '95 for June's Reunion celebrations.
Weekend events provided everyone with the opportunity to reconnect with classmates (and meet their spouses and children), talk to former professors, walk around campus, reminisce about their student days, and have fun.

Members of the Class of 1990 celebrated their ten-year reunion in the Bellarmine Gardens. Pictured are (l-r) Maureen (Leta) Ducret, Marc Ducret, Thomas Corra, Bobby Fagan, Laura Keenan, Peter Ziegler, Beth (Terreri) Gillespie and her husband James, and Theresa (Faustman) Barney.

Future Fairfield alumni enjoyed Saturday's Family Picnic. |

Ron Olivia '60 (with his wife Elizabeth) celebrated his 40th reunion this year. |

Deborah Fitzgerald '85 met up with Rev. W. Laurence O'Neil, S.J., director of student support services, at Saturday night's class cocktail party. |

Rev. Richard F. Meehan '65 and Bob Beauregard '65 caught up on news during their class dinner, which took place in the Robert J. Brennan, Jr. '65 Room, the main hall of the new Alumni House. |

Saturday's picnic was a family affair for these Fairfield grads. Pictured (l-r) are Raymond Mattfeld, Casey Mattfeld, Dawn (Henderson) Mattfeld '90, and JoAnn (Farley) Brown '90 with her son, Patrick. |

Fairfield alumni now have a new place to call home. On the afternoon of May 31, the Alumni Association held the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Fairfield University's new Alumni House.
The main hall, or "great room," of the 9,600 sq. ft. building has been named in honor of Robert J. Brennan, Jr. '65, in recognition of the many years of commitment he has devoted to the Alumni Association. The Brennan Room, along with the second-floor offices and workrooms, provide Alumni Relations and the University community with areas to host meetings and events. As part of Reunion Weekend, members of the Classes of 1955, 1960, and 1965 celebrated their class dinners in the new room.
Pictured (l-r): Rev. Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., University President; Laura A. Incerto '81, alumni association president, 1998-2000; Edward Gleason '62, alumni association president, 1996-98; Roger M. Lynch '63, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Janet Canepa '82, director of alumni relations, alumni association president, 1992-94; and Robert J. Brennan, Jr. '65, alumni association president, 1978-81.

Following a two-year tenure, Laura Incerto '81 (right) presented the Alumni Association president's gavel to Mary-Margaret (Walsh) Weber '84 in June.
Mary-Margaret has been involved with the Alumni Association for 16 years, and was a board member in organizing the 1995-96 Alumnae Forum (which celebrated 25 years of co-education at Fairfield). She and her husband, David '83, have hosted freshman "send-offs" at their Fairfield home, and are members of the President's Circle.
How Fairfield alumni spend their tee time.
Fairfield
The Alumni Association held its 18th Annual Golf Tournament at the Country Club of Fairfield on May 15. This year's event, co-chaired by Rich Papscoe '89 and Dave Weber '83, boasted the most alumni ever to play in the tournament.
A raffle, silent auction, sponsors, and a $5,000 putting contest raised money for athletic scholarships. All prizes were donated by alumni and friends of Fairfield University. If you would like to donate a raffle/silent auction gift or be a sponsor for next year's outing, call the Alumni Relations office at (203) 254-4280.
Boston
Special thanks to Martin MacDonnell '89 and Brendan Downey '92, who organized the 3rd Annual Greater Boston Alumni Club Golf Outing held May 13 at the Juniper Hills Golf Course in Northborough, Mass. More than 70 alumni participated in the event, which raised $1,100 in scholarship money for a Fairfield University student from the Boston area.

Pictured (l-r) are Boston area alumni John Casper '92, Ed Quinn '91, Tom O'Reilly '91, and Darren MacKinnon '91.

To kick off this year's Homecoming Weekend, the Alumni Association will celebrate excellence in athletics at the 19th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame dinner on Friday, October 27. For reservations, contact the Alumni Relations Office at (203) 254-4280. Congratulations to this year's inductees:
Fran Arthurs '95 - Cross Country
Fran garnered a great deal of attention as a member of the women's cross country team during her years at Fairfield. She still holds the top five times for a Fairfield woman at Van Cortland Park, including a record-setting mark (19:54:0) which was set at the Iona Invitational in 1993. In fact, Fran is the only female runner at Fairfield to eclipse the 20-minute mark. Her 5K times are the fastest of any woman in Fairfield's history. Co-captain in 1994, she was named the University's Female Athlete of the Year in 1995. Fran lives in Trumbull, Conn. She teaches math at Trumbull High School where she is head coach of the cross-country team.
Christopher McTague '95 - Swimming and Diving
Upon his graduation, Christopher held more than 10 records, including the 100 butterfly (52.22), the 200 butterfly (1:59.74), and as a member of the record setting 400 medley relay (3.44.96). Christopher also excelled in the MAAC as a three-time champion, and helped the team to its highest finish ever (in third place). He served as team captain for two seasons, and earned the team's MVP award in his senior campaign. In addition, Christopher held two MAAC All-Academic honors and was named chairman of the NCAA Athletic Advisory Board in 1994. Christopher and his wife, Julie (Dunbar) '96, live in Milford, Conn. He works in graphic sales.
Robert Meyers '83 - Club Football
As a student, Bob played a critical role in club football's rise to the number one slot in the country. In his first season, Bob gained 671 yards on 116 carries with seven touchdowns, second only to his brother, and Hall of Famer Tom Meyers. Bob also ranked second on the team with 14 catches for 239 yards, giving back better than nine hundred yards. He played both sides of the ball and developed into a highly regarded defensive back. In fact, he was a 1st Team All-American in 1981 and 1982. During those years, he led the nation in interceptions with 11 and 8 respectively. Meyers was also one of Fairfield's top kick and punt returners. Bob lives in Newtown, Conn., with his wife, Bek, and their sons, John and Matthew. He is a marketing representative with Hann Financial.
Jack Smith '85 - Ice Hockey
Jack is one of the most talented hockey players ever to play at Fairfield University. He ranks first on Fairfield's career assist list (108) and second in career points (190) and goals (82). He was named to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference Team his junior and senior years. Jack ranks second all-time with 31 assists in one season, and second all-time with 57 points in one season. He was co-captain his junior and senior seasons. Jack lives in Duxbury, Mass., with his wife, Julia (McIntosh) Smith '86, and their children, Sullivan, Madeline, Kate, and Lily. Jack works for Alex Brown and Sons in Boston.

Teddy Bears with Love
Thanks to the big hearts of alumni and friends, last Christmas the Alumni Association collected more than 500 teddy bears. The bears were given to children with AIDS who spent the holiday at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Hartford, and to those whose mothers are incarcerated. The collection was part of a program called "Teddy Bears with Love," which was formed in 1991 by a mother and daughter who wanted to deliver a teddy bear "hug" to ill children during the Christmas season.
This year, the Alumni Association's goal is to collect 1,500 bears. You can help by sending a new, unwrapped bear to the Alumni Association at Alumni House, 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT 06430. Please include your name and class year with the bear. Thank you in advance for your love and support.
For more information, contact Nick Segretario '99 (above, left), assistant director of Alumni Relations, at (203) 254-4280.
Last year, Ann (Kardos) Gaudioso '85 (pictured above with her children Victoria, Thomas, and Michael) collaborated with 30 area Girl Scout Troops to collect more than 140 bears for Connecticut children.

The Alumni Association honored four seniors at the Annual Student Awards Dinner on April 18. These students were recognized for their outstanding leadership, community service, and commitment to the Jesuit ideal. Pictured above are Jennifer L. Mazzo (Student Achievement Award), Karen M. Affinito (Student Achievement Award), Gregory E. Newman (St. Ignatius Loyola Medal & William J. Kramer '60 Humanitarian Award), and Lynda D. Jackson-Sealy (Student Achievement Award).
School of Continuing Education celebrates 20 years
A lot can change in 20 years. Just ask Marge Glick, associate dean in the School of Continuing Education (SCE), about the kinds of changes she has seen over the past 16 years she's been with the School. "Our demographics have changed dramatically. During the School's first several years, our students were primarily women who wanted to continue unfinished studies. Today, we see professionals returning to get their business degrees."
Sue Fitzgerald, associate dean in SCE who also has been with the School for 16 years, commented that the non-credit curriculum has also experienced tremendous growth due to the numbers of professionals who return to school to learn new skills.
The School's curriculum has offerings for personal enrichment and professional development, including the degree and certificate programs. "These changing programs are responses to the demand for new skills and knowledge needed for further development and ongoing success," says Dr. Edna Farace Wilson, dean of the School.
Programs for this year range from courses on e-business, computer graphics, and business ethics, to interior design, and antiques. SCE is developing an Ignatian series that will focus on Jesuit history, spirituality, and traditions. Many courses are "web-enhanced" (some materials are available only by accessing a class-specific web location), while others are fully on-line. "These online courses are another way to make education accessible to more students. Education is no longer time- or place-bound," says Dr. Wilson.
Save the date
In celebration of its 20th year, the School of Continuing Education will host a reception for all SCE alumni on Friday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni House. Catch up with former classmates, deans and faculty members, and current students. For more information about SCE, call the dean's office at (203) 254-4124 or 1-888-254-1566.
Buon Appetito
Enjoying a hands-on lesson in the history and preparation of Tuscan foods at the Apicius Cooking School in Florence, Italy, last March were (l-r): Harold Mullen '52, Christopher Barrett '53, Dr. Orin Grossman, academic vice president, William Lucano P'88 (Tara Lucano), and professor Franco Fiesoli, culinary instructor. The class was a part of the School of Continuing Education's annual "Art Discovery Tour to Italy," which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2001.
Dr. Philip Eliasoph, professor of art history, and his wife Yael, adjunct professor of Italian, have escorted more than 1,000 Fairfield students, friends, faculty, alumni, and staff across the Atlantic to "discover" the famous works of Italian artists (and chefs!).
For information about the 20th anniversary tour, call Cris Bowers in the School for Continuing Education at (203) 254-4220.
